COMPARATIVE STUDY OF COMPRESSED EARTH BLOCKS REINFORCED WITH NATURAL FIBRES: ALFA FIBRES, DATE PALM FIBRES AND BARLEY STRAW FIBRES
This study examines the impact of incorporating natural fibres (Alfa, date palm, and barley straw) on the performance of compressed earth blocks (CEBs). The mechanical, thermal, and durability properties of reinforced CEBs were analyzed through tests on compressive and flexural strength, thermal conductivity, water absorption, porosity, and swelling. The results show that CEBs reinforced with fibres heat-treated at 120°C (T2) achieve the best overall performance. Compressive strength reached 3.2 MPa for Alfa fibres, a 28% improvement over the control CEB (2.5 MPa). Flexural strength doubled, reaching 1.2 MPa for Alfa fibres versus 0.6 MPa for the control. Thermal conductivity decreased to 0.20 W/m·K (–20%), while water absorption dropped to 12% for Alfa fibres, compared to 15–20% for the control. Porosity and swelling were also significantly reduced, ensuring better dimensional stability. These findings highlight the effectiveness of natural fibres, particularly Alfa, in enhancing CEB performance. This approach offers a sustainable and eco-friendly construction solution, especially in humid environments.
