Bergen Burnout Inventory: Adaptation and Psychometric Evidence in Brazilian Workers

Objective: The objective was to adapt the Bergen Burnout Inventory (BBI) for Brazil. Theoretical Framework: Burnout has persisted in the organizational context, being associated with emotional exhaustion and loss of motivation, capable of generating social consequences from stressful demands in the work context. Method: The study included 200 workers from the general population (Midade = 38.56), the majority of whom were from Piauí (82%) and were male (52%). They answered the BBI and sociodemographic questions. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was then carried out to analyze the adequacy of the model. Results and Discussion: The CFA corroborated the three-factor structure (exhaustion, cynicism and inadequacy), with adequate internal consistency (precision) of the instrument in question, showing the construct validity of the BBI. The conclusion is that the BBI is an adequate measure and can help professionals and those interested in burnout to verify its prevalence and correlates in Brazilian workers. Research Implications: This study corroborated the literature, as it provided a psychometrically adequate measure that can help professionals and those interested in burnout to verify the prevalence and its correlates in Brazilian workers. Originality/Value: The BBI is an essential measure given the prevalence of symptoms associated with burnout in the Brazilian organizational context.
