On the investigation of modular high-rise concrete buildings in the Asia Pacific region: Engineering application analysis and future directions

• The structural systems of modular buildings and the combination of modules in the Asia Pacific region are different. • The Box-template system is a cast-in-place structure, the module's shell is only a permanent construction template without applied loads. • The Modular-combination system is a prefabricated structure with flexible design. The module's shell replaces steel bars and serves as a permanent building template. • The Modular-superimposed system is a prefabricated structure with convenient construction, the module's shell is a permanent construction template withstand applied loads. Modular integrated construction is currently the green construction method with the highest degree of industrialization in new buildings, which meets the demand for high-quality development of intelligent construction and building industrialization. Modular buildings using concrete shear walls for lateral resistance are particularly suitable for high-rise residential buildings. According to the characteristics of composite construction, the common structures of concrete modular buildings are Box-template systems, modular-composite systems, and modular-superimposed systems. This paper has analyzed the characteristics, shortcomings, and current development status of various modular buildings through case studies. Finally, thoughts and suggestions are put forward for the future development of modular concrete buildings.

Abstract

• The structural systems of modular buildings and the combination of modules in the Asia Pacific region are different. • The Box-template system is a cast-in-place structure, the module's shell is only a permanent construction template without applied loads. • The Modular-combination system is a prefabricated structure with flexible design.
