Intense Absorption of Phosphorescent Biscyclometalated Ir(III) Complex with Triarylborane‐Bound 2,2′–Bipyridine Ligand

A monocationic biscyclometalated Ir(III) complex with triarylborane‐bound 2,2′–bipyridine was designed and synthesized, and its photophysical properties are investigated. The triarylborane–Ir(III) complex exhibits significantly enhanced absorption in the 300–400 nm region compared to pristine biscyclometalated Ir(III) complexes, attributed to contributions from π (aryl)–p(B) charge transfer and metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer transitions. Moreover, IrPhB retains a submicrosecond‐scale excited‐state lifetime comparable to the reference complexes without triarylborane moiety. These features—strong absorption and long‐lived excited state—highlight the high potential of IrPhB for applications in photochemical systems.
