5G Trusted and Secure Network Deployments and Services: The 5G-TACTIC Approach

The adoption and deployment of 5G technologies around the world, creates new opportunities for a large variety of sectors. However, penetration of 5G technologies clearly introduces the need for secure 5G networks. The EU-funded 5G -TACTIC research project is a collaborative effort that aims to develop, integrate, and pilot secure, open, disaggregated, and interoperable 5G solutions bringing together a consortium of partners from various sectors, including National Regulatory Authorities, Cybersecurity Authorities, technology innovators, infrastructure providers, mobile network operators, and research institutes. This work also aims to pave the way towards secure 6G networks. This paper provides an overview of the 5G -TACTIC ecosystem and the involved stakeholder roles as well as the overall architectural approach adopted. In addition, the paper discusses various vulnerabilities and threats considered by 5G -TACTIC. These specifically include RAN and Core Network related security considerations as well as Network Management and Orchestration and Slicing related security considerations relevant to 5G and 6G Network solutions and deployments.
