O PAPEL DA GOMA DE MASCAR NA RECUPERAÇÃO PÓS-OPERATÓRIA: BENEFÍCIOS PARA A MOTILIDADE INTESTINAL E PREVENÇÃO DO ÍLEO PÓS-OPERATÓRIO

This study revisits the use of chewing gum in postoperative recovery, particularly regarding its effect on intestinal motility after surgery. Clinical and experimental studies show that chewing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and promotes the release of pro-motility hormones such as gastrin and motilin, aiding in intestinal recovery. The Cochrane Collaboration (2013) and other researchers highlight the effectiveness of chewing gum, although they emphasize the need for more controlled, long-term trials to strengthen the evidence. Gum chewing is considered a simple, accessible, and low-risk intervention, which can be integrated into multimodal recovery protocols, including early mobilization and pain control. Translational research, bridging experimental and clinical data, is essential to validate chewing gum as an effective and safe practice in postoperative recovery.
