Revisions arthroplasty trends in the second largest Italian region
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to describe the trend of revisions of hip, knee, and shoulder prostheses over a period of 12 years (2008-2019) in Piedmont, the second most populous region in Italy with its 4 million inhabitants.METHODS: This retrospective study includes revisions of hip, knee, and shoulder prostheses that were performed from January 1st, 2008, to December 31st, 2018, in all 75 hospitals in the Piedmont region. The demographic data analyzed (age and gender at the time of the surgical procedure) were obtained from the patient’s medical record stored in the regional operating system, while the technical data (surgery date, type of surgical procedure, number of hospitalization days, and discharge setting) were extracted from the discharge documents.RESULTS: Prosthetic revisions during the study period amounted to 11,909 cases (7502 for hips, 4357 for knees, and 50 for shoulders), out of a total of 174,792 total prostheses.CONCLUSIONS: Throughout the study period, there has been an observed uptick in all prosthetic surgery procedures. Correspondingly, in line with this increase, a rise in revision surgeries has been evident, evenly distributed across all age groups, following the trend of primary replacements.
