Damage Detection in Concrete Elements Reinforced or Strengthened with FRP and New Methods for Improving the Detectability of FRP Bars in Concrete
This study explores the enhancement of detectability of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars embedded in concrete using innovative modifications and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and phased array ultrasonic (PAU) testing were employed to assess the detectability of both commercially available and modified FRP bars. The modifications, including the coating of metallic particles and wire winding on the surface of the FRP bars, were introduced to improve the response of these bars to NDT methods. The results of this study indicated that modified FRP bars demonstrated significantly improved detectability compared to unmodified bars. Specifically, the modified bars were detectable at greater depths and with greater clarity, allowing for more accurate identification of embedded FRP bars and their potential defects. The study highlights the effectiveness of these modifications in enhancing NDT capabilities and suggests their potential for broader application in civil engineering projects.
