Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) Pile Splicing Techniques
Pile splicing is crucial in construction for several reasons, including transportation, length requirements, construction methodologies, and strength capacity considerations. This study addresses a significant challenge in the widespread adoption of precast-prestressed ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) piles: the need for effective and efficient splicing options. This research evaluates two pile splicing methods proposed for UHPC H-shape piles: epoxy-bonded dowel and near-surface mounted bars (NSMB). The section analysis and design were based on relevant UHPC guidelines and design codes, considering zero tensile strength at the spliced joint. Cross-section geometry of the piles was adopted from Florida Department of Transportation’s developmental standard pile details for UHPC piles. Findings show that both proposed splicing methods can meet the necessary strength capacity, making them viable options for implementation. The study recommends further experimental investigations to validate the constructability and implementation of these promising splicing options, potentially advancing the use of UHPC piles in construction projects.
