Verbal Impressionism as a Technique (Based on Bulgakov's Novel The White Guard)
The effect of changing the meaning of a word under the influence of the environment in a fiction text is similar to how it happens in painting, when a color takes on a different shade in the vicinity of other colors. The principle of color induction, which consists in changing the characteristics of a color under the influence of neighboring paints, is most clearly manifested in the technique of impressionism, a similar phenomenon is observed in the verbal field, where the elements accompanying the word, near and far, change its color. In both cases, the meaning of each element is determined by how it coexists with its environment. Changing the meaning of a word under the influence of the environment can be defined as "verbal impressionism", by analogy with the artistic movement in painting. We observe such a method in the artistic style of Bulgakov, when the contextual verbal environment changes the coloring of the word. The purpose of this study is to analyze the artistic technique of "verbal impressionism" by Bulgakov in the novel The White Guard. The main method of the study is the semantic analysis of lexical units of the visual mode, taking into account their contextual environment.
