Light extraction from blue luminescent concentrator Ce:LYSO

We present different strategies for optimizing the light emitted by a LED-pumped Ce:LYSO luminescent concentrator. This optimization includes a spectroscopic analysis and different methods to collect the light guided in the luminescent concentrator towards the output. An optical-optical efficiency of 14.1% is achieved, 4 times better than previous results. Various architectures are proposed for a high-power broadband blue light source, either in a linear or circular output, delivered after fiber coupling. UV LED panels with a total peak power of 3405 W, emitting at 365 nm, are used as pump sources. In quasi-continuous mode (20 µs, 1 Hz), an output power of up to 305 W in the blue spectrum is achieved, while more than 2 W can be delivered in pure continuous mode. This performance opens up applications in medical imaging or optical metrology, as well as the replacement of aging technologies such as xenon flash lamps.
