Lived Experiences of Filipino Youth in Community Development Initiatives in the City of San Fernando, La Union, Philippines

A key element of nation-building is youth participation in community development. However, studies on youth participation, influenced by various motivations and challenges shaping their lived experiences, are still limited. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of 48 Filipino youth in community development initiatives in the City of San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, focusing on their areas of participation, motivations, and challenges. This study utilized qualitative thematic coding analysis to reveal that youth people are highly engaged in planning and decision-making, reflected in the theme "Empowered Voices in Planning and Decision-making." They are also active in implementation but demonstrate limited involvement in monitoring and evaluation, leading to the theme "Hands-on but Not Hands-off." Additionally, two primary motivations drive their participation: "Commitment to the Greater Good," where youth seek to contribute to societal progress, and "Personal Growth and Fulfillment," where they engage in enhancing skills, leadership experience, and personal development. Despite their enthusiasm, youth participation faces logistical constraints and social engagement issues. Strengthening leadership programs, improving organizational structures, and providing necessary support can enhance youth involvement, ensuring their contributions to community development are meaningful and long-lasting.
