On the English Translation of Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang's The Scholars from the Perspective of Field Theory

Based on Bourdieu's field theory, this study deeply analyzes the overseas spread of the English versions of The Scholars by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang. By discussing the translation field, translation habitus and capital formation of the dissemination of The Scholars, this paper reveals the influence on the choice of translation strategies, the dissemination process and the reception effect of overseas audiences. It was found that the social and cultural environment and publishing situation affected translation at that time. Translators were accustomed to blending Chinese and Western cultures, which was unique in translation strategies and language styles. All kinds of capital accumulated by translators contributed to the spread of translations. In terms of cultural capital, with profound cultural accomplishment, translators accurately convey elements such as the imperial examination system, and explain the process, grades, and fame of the imperial examination in detail, to open a window for Western readers to understand the traditional culture of China. On the symbolic capital level, the translation has been recognized by academic circles and readers. It has become an important reference material, often cited by scholars, and its authority attracts more readers. Regarding social capital, with the help of contacts and reputation, translators create opportunities for translation promotion by participating in cultural exchange activities, such as sharing in international conferences and cooperating with foreign institutions, so that translations can enter more research and reading places. This study provides a new perspective for the study of overseas communication of the English version of The Scholars by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang, which helps promote the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
