Insights into the properties of pervious concrete modified with polymers and fine aggregate

Pervious concrete is increasingly being utilized in urban road construction; however, its low strength and durability limit its broader applications. This study explores the use of fine aggregate and polymers to enhance the strength and durability of pervious concrete. The effects of fine aggregate combined with epoxy resin (ER), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsion on the durability and frost resistance of pervious concrete are investigated. The results reveal that pervious concrete modified with 5 % VAE achieves a compressive strength of 34.6 MPa and a permeability coefficient of 2.75 mm/s. Meanwhile, concrete modified with 2 % ER reaches a maximum flexural strength of 4.2 MPa and a permeability coefficient of 2.78 mm/s. Among the polymers tested, a 4 % addition of epoxy resin significantly improves abrasion and frost resistance. After 100 freeze-thaw cycles, the mass loss and strength loss rates are 0.28 % and 6.17 %, respectively. Compared to SBR and VAE, ER shows the best overall performance in improving the properties of pervious concrete while maintaining the required permeability. This research enhances the understanding of the impact of polymers on pervious concrete properties and provides valuable theoretical support for the development of high-performance pervious concrete.
