Effects of Statin on Recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Who Received Maze Operation and Mitral Valve Surgery
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of statins on recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after mitral valve surgery and maze operation in patients with mitral valve disease and AF.Methods: A total of 129 patients (age, 58.99.4 years; 90 women) who received mitral valve surgery and maze operation were included. The patients were grouped into the statin and no-statin groups according to statin during the perioperative period.Clinical recurrence was defined as detection of AF or atrial flutter in 12-lead electrocardiogram or AF or atrial flutter >30 s in Holter monitoring 3 months after maze operation. Results:The statin and no-statin groups comprised 32 and 97 patients, respectively. The patients were followed up for 62.328.1 months. The patients in the statin group had older age, less frequency of diabetes, and lower total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels than the patients in the no-statin group. No significant difference in AF-free survival was observed between the two groups (hazard ratio, 1.500 [0.752-2.989];p=0.249).Conclusions: Statins did not reduce AF recurrence rate in patients who received mitral valve surgery and maze operation.
