<deog> in Beowulf 850 und eine althochdeutsche Glosse

Abstract In the Old English poem Beowulf, the hapax legomenon <deog> is found in verse 850. Due to the new reading of an Old High German gloss as <vvari katokan> with the meaning ‘to change, to (dis-)colour, to stain’, it is argued that the old interpretation of <deog> as ‘(dis-)coloured’ is the most likely one.
