Verification of Nasogastric Tube Placement: Supporting Abdominal X-ray
Verifying nasogastric tube placement is critical to patient safety . While chest X-rays are commonly used, they have limitations in visualizing the tube’s distal end and side holes. This article advocates for incorporating abdominal X-rays to improve accuracy and reduce risks such as aspiration. A combined imaging protocol is proposed to enhance clinical outcomes and patient safety. • Chest X-rays may miss the tube’s distal end and side holes, raising aspiration risk. • Abdominal X-rays improve visualization and enhance safety in high-risk patients. • Placing the tube beyond the gastroesophageal junction lowers aspiration risk. • A combined chest and abdominal X-ray approach may improve accuracy and outcomes.
