Cyber Risk Analysis on Electric Vehicle Systems via NIST CSF

New cybersecurity challenges are often introduced by the rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market. Currently, the inclusion of advanced digital systems and connectivity features to the vehicles, which were lacking in their past conventional form, brings to the table opportunities for malicious actors to explore. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive cyber risk assessment for electric vehicles, especially the Tesla Model 3, by leveraging the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework (NIST CSF). It brings the ability to help organizations identify, protect, detect, respond and recover from incidents in a well-structured way. With the help of the framework, we identify critical threats to the EV systems, assess their likelihood and impact and propose mitigation strategies. The findings are analyzed to highlight the advantages of this approach and develop enhancements to increase the confidence and reduce the incident impacts on EV systems.
