Awareness of China English

The English language has become globally prevalent as an International Language (EIL), gaining legitimacy in outer-circle regions through the study of World Englishes and achieving significant status in expanding-circle areas like East Asia. In China, English has grown remarkably over the past thirty years. This study examines the awareness of China English among Chinese Business English learners and their preferences for varieties used in Chinese classrooms, within the context of EIL. Data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis (QCA). Findings reveal their mixed awareness of China English, despite an emerging appreciation for English as a multicultural tool, continue to favor mastering standard English to avoid being labeled non-standard, and generally strongly prefer British or American English. This study contributes to World Englishes theory and offers practical insights for inclusive English Language Teaching in China, supporting diverse English varieties for effective global communication.
