Impact of electrodeposition parameters on hydrogen absorption and α-β phases formation in palladium electroplating

The effect of current density and thickness of palladium deposits have been investigated toward the adsorbed amount and the release rate of hydrogen. Direct and pulsed current depositions were carried out to evaluate their effect on the absorption-desorption rate. We found that at low current densities the formation of the hydrogen-rich β phase , useful in the energy sector, is favored; while at higher current densities the α phase , with a low hydrogen content, desired in the electroplating sector, is preferred. It was also observed that the desorption rate depends on the morphology of the deposit.

Abstract

The effect of current density and thickness of palladium deposits have been investigated toward the adsorbed amount and the release rate of hydrogen. Direct and pulsed current depositions were carried out to evaluate their effect on the absorption-desorption rate. We found that at low current densities the formation of the hydrogen-rich β phase , useful in the energy sector, is favored; while at higher current densities the α phase , with a low hydrogen content, desired in the electroplating sector, is preferred. It was also observed that the desorption rate depends on the morphology of the deposit.
