Conceptualizing the Digital Twin: An Analysis of Definitions, Applications, Technologies, Benefits and Challenges
Digital twins (DTs) have emerged as a revolutionary technology for Industry 4.0, enabling real-time synchronization between physical and virtual entities for data-driven decision-making, predictive analytics and operational efficiency. This paper provides an in-depth examination at DT, consolidating fragmented definitions and a thorough analysis of its applications, enabling technologies, benefits and challenges in various sectors. Key industries such as manufacturing, aerospace and healthcare are known to be early adopters of DT, leveraging its potential for enhanced productivity, real-time monitoring and process improvements. The study highlights fundamental enabling technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), big data and cloud computing, which together underpin the successful adoption of DT systems. Despite its many benefits, DT faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of data integration, real-time synchronization, scalability and cybersecurity. By summarizing these findings, this paper provides a coherent framework to guide researchers and practitioners to understand and effectively deploy DT technologies, providing a pathway for innovation and application in various industries.
