3D Numerical modelling of residual stresses induced in longitudinal turning of a TA6V titanium alloy
Residual stresses play a major role in determining the fatigue life of critical components. The state of residual stresses in the surface layer depends on the final finishing operation. In the case of shafts, turning is the most common process used to finish the functional surfaces. Predicting the fatigue resistance of shafts requires the determination of the 3D residual stress field. A model, known as the "3D hybrid multipass model" has been previously developed to predict the 3D residual stress state induced by 3D longitudinal turning after several passes. The model simulates the generation of residual stresses by considering equivalent 3D thermo-mechanical loadings moving across the surface. This article aims to apply this model in a new case study: the finish turning of a TA6V alloy.
