TECENDO CUIDADO: A EXPERIÊNCIA DO SUS NO ATENDIMENTO À PESSOA IDOSA E O IMPACTO DAS POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS NA VIDA E NA ARTE DE ENVELHECER

Introduction: Population aging in Brazil represents one of the greatest contemporary challenges for the Unified Health System (SUS), requiring the consolidation of public policies aimed at comprehensive health care for older adults. The National Policy for the Health of the Elderly (PNSPI), established by Ordinance No. 2.528/2006, and the Elderly Statute (Law No. 10,741/2003) are fundamental milestones in this process. Objective: To report an experience in elderly care in Primary Health Care and reflect, in light of Brazilian public policies, on the challenges and possibilities of care within SUS. Methodology: This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, based on documentary analysis and an experience report during the follow-up of an older adult in a Primary Health Unit in the Federal District. The theoretical framework included official documents from the Ministry of Health, scientific articles, and national guidelines on elderly health (BRASIL, 2003; BRASIL, 2006; VERAS, 2009; CUNHA et al., 2021). Results: Despite the patient’s functional independence and social engagement, factors such as the distance from the health unit, absence of an elderly health booklet, and barriers to adherence to physical activities compromised comprehensive care. Home visits and bonding with the health team were valuable strategies. Conclusion: Although there have been significant advances in public policies for the elderly, structural and organizational challenges remain. The experience highlights the need to expand strategies such as telemedicine, strengthen home care, and train health teams to ensure more comprehensive, humane, and effective care.
