Flint Plastic Of The Middle Urals: New Findings And Interpretations

The article publishes newly found flint plastic items discovered by excavations at multi-layered monuments on the Shaytan Lake shore, Kirovogradsky District, Sverdlovsk Region. The category of shaped flint stones lists six figurines and fish-shaped arrowheads. The figurines mainly depict profiles and can be divided into two morphological groups, namely full-body figurines and partial (head) figurines. The image prototypes are the largest forest inhabitants such as a moose, a bear, pine forest fowl, waterfowl and fresh-water fishes. The items can also be divided into two groups by the workmanship method. One group of items has retouched edges, while the other one was exposed to bilateral flat retouch of the surface. The closest range of analogies and the chronological range of the figurines varies through the turn of the 5th/4th century BC, the mid and the third quarter of the 3rd millenium BC. This chronology corresponds to the Eneolithic complexes with different cultural attributions. The newly found flint figurines are analysed using the closest analogies vector. This analysis shows that the part of the collection manufactured with edge retouch is likely to have the local origin. The part of the collection exposed to bilateral retouch has morphological, style and sometimes material characteristics that strongly resemble flint sculptures from the Volga-Kama region and the European North-East. This part of the collection is particularly associated with the areas that had prevailing bifacial flaking technologies during the Neolithic and Eneolithic.
