Highlights of recent clinically relevant papers
In this study, Charlotte McGivney and colleagues in Ireland conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic risk factors for recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) in Thoroughbred horses. The horses were classified as RLN cases or controls based on detailed endoscopic and ultrasonographic examinations, with additional data from a questionnaire. The study analysed 43,831 singlenucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 235 horses, including 110cases and 125 controls. The heritability of RLN was estimated at 0.30, and several SNPs were found to be significantly associated with the condition.Notably, an SNP on ECA20, near the genes DAAM2 and LRFN2 showed a strong association with RLN.Other SNPs on ECA1, ECA14 and ECA20, linked to genes such as ATPA10, KCNN2 and TFAP2A, were also identified, with some showing notable effect
