Urban landscapes through the eyes of people with intellectual disability and down syndrome. The case of the city of Pontevedra (Spain)

This research raises the question of whether future cities will be truly inclusive. In this sense, social inclusion has long been studied in urban planning and mobility with notable success; however, the development of research focused on people with Intellectual Disability (ID) and especially Down Syndrome (DS) is a pending task for science in order to develop a perspective of more inclusive cities. In this research we work together with DS associations and directly with people with this chromosomal mutation to analyse the urban landscape through the eyes of this group. In our conception and analysis of the landscape, we look at both its physical and perceived aspects. We want to develop maps of urban use by this group, as well as to understand the iconographic elements that make up the territorial cosmovision of the landscape of this sector of the population. Likewise, we will compare the lived and perceived landscape of the same city for both residents and visitors, always from the point of view of this group. This research will allow us to develop a replicable methodology to obtain information to adapt the socio-territorial planning of cities, making this social group a building block of urban identity.
