Enhancement of high-temperature durability for Ni-20Co-28Cr-10Al-0.5Y coatings via high-current pulsed electron beam irradiation at 1323 K

The arc ion plated NiCoCrAlY coating was irradiated by high-current pulsed electron beam (HCPEB). A comparison of high temperature properties was made between the HCPEB-treated and conventional NiCoCrAlY coatings. The isothermal and cyclic oxidation tests of two types of coatings were evaluated at 1323 K, and the finite element simulation analysis of the coating after cyclic oxidation test was carried out. The results indicated that the HCPEB-treated coating demonstrated superior anti-oxidation properties. The adherent, thinner α-Al 2 O 3 scale effectively prevented the emergence of detrimental (Ni, Co)(Cr, Al) 2 O 4 spinel oxide . Moreover, the HCPEB treatment promotes the transformation of θ-Al 2 O 3 to α-Al 2 O 3 in the initial oxidation stage. The effect of HCPEB treatment on oxidation resistance and TGO (Thermally Grown Oxide) spallation resistance of the NiCoCrAlY coating is discussed in detail. • The Outer nanocrystalline layer induced by HCPEB facilitates the selective oxidation of Al. • HCPEB treatment promotes the phase transformation from θ to α-Al 2 O 3 during the initial oxidation stage. • Improved oxidation resistance has been achieved with the HCPEB-treated NiCoCrAlY coating. • HCPEB irradiation enhances the interfacial bonding properties between TGO and BC.
