Relevance of Platelet-lymphocyte Ratio in Tumor Characteristics and Survival in Clear Cell-renal Cell Carcinoma
Abstract Background: The platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a useful metric for evaluating various solid tumors. PLR is utilized in clear cell-renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) to evaluate the features and prognosis of the tumor. Herein, we report the observations of higher PLR (>130) in ccRCC patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study conducted at Baby Memorial Hospital from January 2005 to March 2015. One hundred and forty-seven patients of ccRCC with documented PLR were retrieved and selected for the study from the hospital-based information system and follow-up. Patients were subjected to partial or radical nephrectomy as per the lesion characteristics. Results: The mean age of the patients was 53 years (28–81 years), with 123 (83.7%) male and 24 (16.3%) female patients. There were 82 (56%) more patients with right-sided tumors than left-sided ones (65, 44%). PLR was raised (>130) at 57 points and normal (≤130) in 90 others. PLR shown a strong link with both renal vein invasion ( P = 0.029) and lymph node metastasis ( P < 0.001) in our study, after being compared to tumor size, Fuhrman’s grading, metastasis-free survival, and lymph node metastasis. Those with >130 PLR had a mean survival of 118.1 months, whereas those with <130 PLR had a mean survival of 143.6 months. With a P = 0.328, which is not statistically significant. Conclusion: The use of PLR in ccRCC shows a strong correlation with renal vein extension and lymph node positivity. Implementing PLR for key treatment decisions can result in quicker, more efficient outcomes for patients.
