Metabolic and Paracrine Heterogeneity of Pancreatic Glucagon-Secreting α-Cells
A subpopulation of α-cells lack spontaneous electrical activity. KATP channel blockers, somatostatin receptor antagonists, or amino acids activate silent α-cells. Stimulatory effects of amino acids are inversely related to basal glucagon secretion. Metabolic and paracrine heterogeneity determines glucagon secretion.
