Characterization of CYA:RE3+ powder and security ink for luminescent tagging of documents

The luminescent ceramic powders CaYAl3O7 (CYA) with various doping concentration of Eu3+ ions (0.5 – 40 at.%) were synthesized by solid state method. The phase purity, morphology as well as photoluminescence properties of the CaYAl3O7:Eu3+ were investigated as a function of active ions doping. The concentration quenching effect was observed for powders doped above 30 at.% of Eu3+ ions. The XRD analysis confirmed dominant content of the tetragonal CYA phase and high purity of the samples. The PLE spectra were measured in UV-VIS region and the high intense PL spectra consist of three bands with maximum peak at 702.4 nm due to 7F0 → 5D4 transition were observed. The obtained CYA:Eu3+ powder was investigated for luminescent tagging application. The material was successfully incorporated into ink base and printed on security paper using screen-printing method.
