The Contribution of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGS to Sustainability and Resilience in Organizations: A Case Study in the Largest Electricity Company in Latin America
Objective: This study aims to analyze whether the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contribute to organizational resilience and corporate sustainability, using Eletrobras as the case study. Given the increasing importance of resilience and sustainability in business discussions, the research investigates the impact of adopting the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs on business management, assessing their influence on corporate sustainability and, consequently, on organizational resilience. Theoretical Framework: This section presents the main concepts and theories that support the research. It highlights the interconnected nature of systemic changes, unexpected and abrupt events, and global risks that impact people's lives, businesses, and the environment. The study is grounded in theories related to corporate sustainability, organizational resilience, and sustainable development, particularly focusing on the role of the SDGs as a strategic framework for enhancing these dimensions within organizations. Method: The methodology of this research consists of a case study, employing desk research to analyze data and information from Eletrobras between 2011 and 2020. The study investigates the process of integrating the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs into business management and evaluates their impact on corporate sustainability and organizational resilience. The research employs a selection of key indicators and performs statistical tests to assess the correlation between corporate sustainability and organizational resilience. Results and Discussion: The results indicate that both corporate sustainability and organizational resilience improved following the incorporation of the SDGs at Eletrobras. Statistical analyses reveal a strong, significant, and positive correlation between these two variables. The discussion contextualizes these findings within the theoretical framework, exploring the implications of SDG adoption for business resilience and sustainability strategies. Additionally, potential limitations and discrepancies in the study are addressed. Research Implications: The findings offer valuable insights into the practical and theoretical implications of integrating SDGs into corporate strategies. In the field of business sustainability and resilience, the study provides evidence that aligning corporate policies with global sustainability goals enhances an organization's ability to withstand and adapt to crises. These implications are particularly relevant for energy sector companies, policymakers, and business leaders seeking to improve sustainability and resilience practices. Originality/Value: This study contributes to literature by empirically demonstrating the relationship between corporate sustainability and organizational resilience in the context of SDG adoption. The originality lies in the longitudinal approach of analyzing data over nearly a decade and using statistical methods to measure this correlation. The findings reinforce the importance of incorporating global sustainability frameworks into business strategies, providing a practical roadmap for companies aiming to enhance resilience through sustainable development initiatives.
