Ceramics of Koshkino Site: 60 Years Later

The eponymous Neolithic Koshkino V site is a significant monument in the Neolithic historiography both in the forest-steppe Pritobolye and in the Urals and the south of Western Siberia. To obtain new data about the site, one of the authors conducted field surveys and small-scale excavations in 2021–2022 aiming to acquire a relevant ceramic assemblage. This paper consolidates all available published data on the archive (so far lost), and briefly analyzes the Koshkinskiy type of ceramics in the historiographical context. The study also compares the obtained data with the findings of the new fieldwork. The materials under discussion are extremely limited in number; however, the historiographical context renders their examination quite significant. The ceramic items were exposed to typological and technical & technological tests. The excavation operates two well-coordinated radiocarbon dates established through direct dating of the ceramics and the excavated soil. The dates allow to attribute the explored complex to the Late Neolithic. Additionally, the new excavation discovered a group of textile ceramics. There is nothing similar anywhere else in the Pritobolye. Similar complexes in adjacent territories are associated with the Eneolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Since the discussed materials are too scarce for far-reaching conclusions, the authors consider it appropriate to adhere to the Neolithic dating obtained through radiocarbon dating until more representative data on textile ceramics in the region is acquired. The attempt to compare the new materials with the lost archival collection is highly challenging and does not allow establishing direct parallels. Although similarities in the typological composition are clearly present. Overall, the obtained data necessitate more fieldwork in the region under consideration, including reconnaissance surveys.
