Social & Cultural Space in the Mesolithic and Neolithic Trans-Urals

The concept of social & cultural space is basic for archaeology, as it integrates the concepts of physical and social systems, social needs reflected in the tangible culture and time. This article aims to define the criteria and to consider the origins of the social & cultural space in the Neolithic Trans-Urals. The Mesolithic and Neolithic Trans-Urals stand out with technological and cultural peculiarities. These peculiarities list siliceous raw materials, the flaking system and typological set of tools, types of tools original for the mentioned territory, cultural traditions in ceramic ware (cultural and chronological complexes). One of the significant natural resources in the Stone Age is siliceous raw material for producing tools. Siliceous rocks are the most common in the bedrock and superficial deposits along the eastern slopes of the Southern and Middle Urals. Pritobolye does not reveal siliceous rocks natural deposits. It means such rocks could have been brought here only by people. Mesolithic hunter groups used Trans-Ural siliceous rocks for making tools but they never crossed the Tobol River right bank. The materials of Trans-Urals Mesolithic monuments have stone tools complexes similar to one another by their main characteristics. Some Mesolithic complexes of the Trans-Urals contain such typical tools as geometric microliths, for instance, asymmetric trapezoids and triangles, while other sites lack such artifacts. The sites in both categories are known so far to be equal in number. The sites with asymmetric trapezoids are not concentrated in a particular area, neither are the sites without them. Furthermore, they are found throughout the entire Trans-Urals. Since the workmanship technology of the mentioned complexes is the same, presumably these are two variants of the same Mesolithic tradition. In contrast Neolithic monuments are far more common and stretch across the Tobol and Ishim interfluves. The mapping allows determining the social & cultural space of the Trans-Urals Neolithic. This space is a historical space considered from the point of view of the existing cultural traditions in certain societies in in time and space of 7th–5th millennia BC. э.

The concept of social & cultural space is basic for archaeology, as it integrates the concepts of physical and social systems, social needs reflected in the tangible culture and time. This article aims to define the criteria and to consider the origins of the social & cultural space in the Neolithic Trans-Urals.
