Calprotectin as a potential marker of melanoma metastasis
Background: Malignant melanoma is the most agressive type of skin tumours and its incidence is increasing. The tumour arising from melanocytes remains a major challenge for early detection and monitoring of disease progression. S100B has been a commonly used marker in melanoma for a long time. Human calprotectin is also a Ca2+-binding S100A8/S100A9 heterodimeric protein of the S100 protein family, which is a promising marker in several inflammation-related diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
