Role of Artificial Intelligence in Groundwater Management: Challenges and Opportunities in Afghanistan
Water is fundamental for life and essential for agriculture and urban infrastructure. Traditional water management approaches are increasingly inadequate due to factors such as rapid urbanization, climate change, and pollution. This research paper explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) on groundwater management and agricultural water practices. AI innovations, including predictive modelling, real-time monitoring, and decision support systems, are advancing groundwater management by enabling proactive decision-making, optimizing resource allocation, and enhancing the accuracy of hydrogeological models. Real-time monitoring through IoT devices and AI algorithms allows for continuous assessment of groundwater quality, improving responsiveness to contamination risks. In agriculture, AI enhances water balance assessments and optimizes irrigation schedules, leading to increased crop yields and reduced water usage. Despite the promising advancements, challenges such as data quality, model transparency, and the need for technical expertise persist. Looking ahead, AI offers future opportunities such as decentralized water systems, digital twin technology for modelling, and improved data collaboration. This research underscores the significant potential of AI to revolutionize water management practices, addressing current limitations and contributing to sustainable water resource management.
