First case of Multiple Self-Healing Palmoplantar Carcinoma Associated with Psoriasis-like Eruption
Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a parameter that reproduces the volume heterogeneity of RBCs, and it can be obtained from the standard deviation (SD) of erythrocyte volumes for the mean corpuscular volume (MCV)High RDW values reveal greater size variations of red blood cells, which were reported to be associated with multiple interconnected factors, such as chronic inflammation, prolonged bleeding, or oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to evaluate total neutrophil count, NLR and RDW in patients treated with cemiplimab in order to define a potential predictive biomarker of efficacy. Methods: We conducted a multicenter observational analysis of neutrophil total cell count, NLR and RDW levels on patients treated with anti-PD1 cemiplimab for advanced or metastatic squamocellular carcinoma. We included 34 patients in the period March 2021-October 2024.Inclusion criteria were: age range >18 years; either sex; ECOG: 0-2; histologically confirmed SCC; locally advanced or metastatic SCC.Results: At the fourth month of therapy, total neutrophil count showed a statistically significant increase in those patients who did not obtain a clinical response. Conclusions: Further investigations are needed to understand how immunotherapies modify the already complex immune response to cancer, but we believe that our search for reliable biomarkers is a first step in the right direction.
