Post-Intensive Care Rehabilitation
Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) places an extensive burden on patients, their family members, and wider health and social care systems. To attempt to alleviate this burden, various interventions have been developed and evaluated, including ICU diaries, physical rehabilitation interventions, rehabilitation prescriptions, peer-support programs, and ICU follow-up clinics. Systematic reviews of these interventions frequently demonstrate no evidence of benefit compared with existing practices. However, synthesis of evidence on these interventions is known to be hampered by heterogeneity in participant sample, intervention design, outcome selection, and tools used to measure these outcomes.
