Drugs: Youth and Physical, Mental, Social Problems

This study explores the physical, mental, and social challenges faced by youth as a result of drug addiction, focusing on individuals receiving care at the Centre for Rehabilitation and Treatment of Drug Addicts in the Avissawella Puwakpitiya region of Sri Lanka. The research specifically targeted 44 male clients, aged 18 to 24, who were undergoing residential rehabilitation. Employing a qualitative, post-objectivist research approach, data were gathered through targeted interviews and free-ranging discussions, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the issue. The findings reveal that drug addiction significantly affects the physical health, mental well-being, and social functioning of young individuals. Physically, drug dependency leads to deteriorated health, reduced energy levels, and increased vulnerability to chronic illnesses. Mentally, addiction contributes to depression, anxiety, and diminished cognitive abilities, hindering personal and professional development. Socially, these individuals face stigma, isolation, and disrupted relationships, exacerbating their marginalization within their communities. On a broader scale, the study highlights the detrimental impact of youth drug addiction on Sri Lanka’s labor force, particularly as it pertains to the economic contributions of young individuals, who are key drivers of societal progress. This erosion of the youth’s potential has cascading effects on economic stability and social cohesion, emphasizing the urgent need for effective intervention strategies. This article underscores the interconnectedness of the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of drug addiction among youth and calls for a multidimensional approach to rehabilitation, prevention, and societal reintegration. The findings contribute to the global discourse on youth drug addiction and provide a foundation for targeted policy development and community-based interventions.
