Project Overview for the Pretreatment of HLW by an Electrochemical Denitration and Caustic Generation (EDCGe) System at Hanford - 25518
The Hanford tank waste cleanup mission is the largest environmental liability of the DOE's The WTP facility at Hanford will function to immobilize HLW in vitrified glass, as a suitable waste-form • DF-HLW flowsheet based process has been selected to offer major cost and time savings to the Hanford WTP and stakeholders • DF-HLW flowsheets pose new challenges by bypassing a waste pretreatment facility • Specifically, the feed is rich in nitrites and nitrates, which will produce copious amounts of NOx and NH3 gases at the WTP melter • Processing requirements and complexity of the off-gas treatment process can largely be reduced if NO3 - /NO2 - are removed prior to vitrification
