Alcohol and depression: Understanding and managing the interrelationship in primary care
Alcohol misuse and depression have surged since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, placing significant stress on primary care. In 2022, the UK recorded its highest number of alcohol-specific deaths. Rates of depression remain elevated post-pandemic and secondary care services are struggling to deal with the increased demand. Many patients experience concurrent depression and alcohol misuse. This article aims to illustrate the complex interaction between alcohol and depression, providing tools for identifying these conditions while offering strategies that will hopefully place your patients at the centre of their care plans.
