The Importance of Biotechnology for Waste Management

Objective: The objective of the research was to analyze the contributions of biotechnology to waste management, investigating the most widely used biotechnological techniques, their benefits, challenges and the potential for innovation in transforming waste into resources. Methodology: The research adopted a descriptive and practical approach, with semi-structured interviews conducted with 12 professionals in the field of biotechnology and waste management. The sample was selected based on the participants' experience and performance in sectors related to the topic. Data collection was carried out through individual interviews, and data analysis was qualitative, using content analysis to identify patterns, categories and emerging themes related to the use of biotechnology in waste management. Results and Data Analysis: The results revealed that biotechnology plays a crucial role in waste management, especially in biodegradation, composting and bioremediation techniques. These technologies were highlighted by the participants as effective solutions in the treatment of organic waste and in the decontamination of polluted environments. Bioremediation, in particular, was identified as a promising solution for cleaning up areas contaminated by industrial pollutants. Furthermore, the use of genetically modified microorganisms was mentioned as a way to improve the efficiency of degrading toxic substances. The research also highlighted the contribution of biotechnology to the circular economy, with the conversion of waste into new products, such as biofuels and bioplastics. However, significant challenges were identified, such as the scalability of the technologies, the high cost of implementation and the lack of infrastructure in some regions. Public acceptance of biotechnological technologies was also identified as an obstacle, mainly due to ethical and safety issues. Final considerations: Biotechnology has shown great potential in waste management, offering innovative and sustainable solutions for transforming waste into valuable resources. However, there are still challenges to be overcome, such as scalability, initial costs and the lack of adequate regulation. Public acceptance and awareness of the benefits of these technologies are essential for their large-scale implementation. With advances in research and improvements in infrastructure, biotechnology technologies have the potential to become an essential tool for promoting more efficient and environmentally responsible waste management. The research has contributed to the understanding of the applications and limitations of biotechnology in this context, highlighting its growing role in developing solutions for a more sustainable future.
