Effective Communication Between Multiprofessional Health Teams: Practical Strategies to Ensure Patient Safety and Quality of Care
Introduction: Effective communication among multiprofessional teams in the hospital setting is a key factor in ensuring patient safety and quality of care. Communication failures are associated with clinical errors, inefficiencies in decision-making, and negative impacts on patient outcomes. Structured strategies such as standardized protocols, interdisciplinary training, and communication tools have been shown to optimize collaboration among healthcare professionals. Objective: This study aims to identify and analyze practical strategies that enhance interprofessional communication in the hospital environment, highlighting their influence on patient safety and quality of care. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted with studies published between 2020 and 2024. The research was guided by the PICo model (Population, Interest, and Context), focusing on healthcare professionals working in hospitals (P), the improvement of interprofessional communication (I), and the context of patient safety and quality of care (Co). The search was carried out in databases such as PubMed, LILACS, SciELO, and Scopus, using the Boolean code “Interprofessional Communication” AND “Patient Safety” AND “Multiprofessional Teams.” After screening 217 initial articles, 10 studies were selected for final analysis, following PRISMA guidelines. Results and Discussion: The review indicated that implementing interdisciplinary training, standardized protocols, and regular meetings significantly improves information exchange clarity and reduces the incidence of care errors. Structured methods such as SBAR contribute to the systematization of communication, especially in critical situations. Additionally, the use of technologies, such as electronic health records, has facilitated coordination among teams, optimizing continuity of care. However, challenges such as professional resistance to adopting new methods and the lack of standardization in some institutions still pose barriers to efficient communication. Conclusion: The adoption of well-defined strategies to enhance interprofessional communication is essential for strengthening patient safety and improving quality of care. Investments in continuous training, standardized protocols, and technological tools are fundamental for transforming clinical practice and optimizing the performance of multiprofessional teams.
