Evaluation of the Cuticle Enhancer Parka as a Preventative Treatment for Sour Rot in Grapes, 2024
Sour rot of grape is a growing concern among grape growers in the United States, which is caused by a complex interaction between Gluconobacter spp. and Acetobacter spp., fruit flies, and naturally occurring yeast. A vinegar smell, broken berries, and loss of berry pulp integrity are general symptoms of sour rot. In this field trial, the cuticle enhancer Parka was evaluated in combination with the insecticide Mustang Maxx as a possible preventative for sour rot. The trial was conducted on a Vitis vinifera hybrid (‘Cayuga White’) at Elsass Vineyards in Anna, OH, during August of 2024. Results showed no significant difference between the treatments and the nontreated control, but additional field trials are necessary to advise producers on sour rot management.
