Clinicopathological study of pilocytic astrocytoma

Objective: This study aims to explore the demographics, management strategies, and prognostic factors associated with pilocytic astrocytoma at a single center in Pakistan. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed 45 pilocytic astrocytma cases diagnosed at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer and Research Hospital from January 2015 to December 2016. The study focused on variables such as age, gender, radiological findings, tumor location, morphology, surgical management, recurrence, and repeat surgeries. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 20. Results: The study found a male predominance (2:1) and identified the cerebellum as the most common tumor location. Despite the typically favorable prognosis, recurrence was observed, particularly in cases with larger tumors and oligodendroglioma-like morphology. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of complete resection and identifies specific morphological patterns associated with poorer outcomes. Further population-based studies are needed to validate these findings and improve the management of pilocytic astrocytoma in resource-limited settings like Pakistan. Keywords: Pilocytic astrocytoma, Recurrence, Histological features, Radiological features, Prognosis
