Contextualized Perspective on Introduction of a Formative E-assessment Module in Physiology to Phase I MBBS Students – A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract Introduction: A paradigm shift toward meaningful pedagogic assessment tools involving student engagement with an opportunity to self-assess their performance to enhance learning outcomes is essential. With integration of digitalization in medical education, formative e-assessment has emerged as a versatile tool for facilitating personalized learning and continuous improvement. This study was designed to seek the perceptions of first MBBS students and Phase I faculty toward introduction of an objective structured e-assessment tool for formative assessment (FA) in physiology. Materials and Methods: Learning management system (LMS) software was used as an online platform. A module in the form of a powerpoint (PPT) containing 20 questions based on crossword puzzles, multiple-choice questions, match the columns, problem-solving, gif, image-based, word scramble, etc., was introduced. Students were asked to solve these questions in 30 min and upload it on LMS, followed by an interactive session with the subject expert with solutions to these brainstorming questions. Students self-analyzed themselves and were guided regarding further reading resources for in-depth understanding. Students and faculty perceptions about this module using Google Form questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively with derivation of mean scores and qualitatively through verbatims. Results: Students and faculty showed positive attitude toward utilization of this tool for FA as derived from mean scores calculated for each item in the Google Form questionnaires based on the Likert’s scale. Conclusion: An engaging way of formative e-assessment in the classroom itself with the use of digital tools provides active and fun learning environment promoting deep learning of the subject. In view of NExT, such objective, clinically relevant questions may provide a platform for holistic development of the medical students.
