The Role of Action Verbs in the Formation of Evaluativeness of the Statement

Introduction. The relevance of the study is due to the growing interest in the cognitive mechanisms of the formation of evaluativeness in language, as well as the need for a more detailed study of the role of action verbs in the organization of the semantic structure of an utterance. The aim of the study is to identify the mechanisms by which action verbs profile evaluative categories and organize the interaction between the subject, object and context of the action. Materials and Methods. The study was carried out on the material of the collection of short stories “Dogs and Other People” by the Russian author Zakhar Prilepin. The study methodology is based on the cognitive and functional-semantic approaches to the analysis of language units. Results. The study proves that action verbs play a significant role in the formation of evaluative categories of the text due to metaphorization by creating associations with physical actions, natural phenomena and abstract states. That contributes to the improvement of the reader’s perception of the text. The use of cognitive mechanisms enhances the evaluative component of the text and focuses the reader’s attention on key aspects of the action. Discussion and Conclusion. The conclusions made by the author contribute to the development of cognitive linguistics. Prospects for further research are associated with an in-depth study of the interaction of action verbs with other cognitive mechanisms in different genres of texts. The materials of the article can be useful for teaching the Russian language and developing the methods of functional-semantic analysis.
