Forte San Giovanni: dal rilievo digitale, all’accessibilità culturale, passando per la modellazione e ricostruzione BIM delle fasi storiche del sito

Forte San Giovanni, located in Finale Ligure (Savona), is among the most well-preserved examples of defensive structures built by the Spanish Crown in the Finale area. Its current form, finalized in 1644, incorporates the medieval defensive turret of Becchignolo. The fortress present structure reflects a series of incremental modifications that not only altered its shape and size but also redefined its functional purpose over time. This study addresses four key themes: Digital Survey: comprehensive 3D laser scanning-using terrestrial, mobile, and aerial instruments-to generate a detailed point cloud of the site; BIM Modeling: Application of the scan-to-BIM methodology to create an accurate digital twin of the fortress in its present state; construction Phase Simulation: Reconstruction of the site’s historical development through a BIM workflow, from its medieval origins to its contemporary form; historical narratives and accessibility: development of digital models and virtual animations to convey the fortress’s timeline, offering a strategy to overcome physical, cultural, and cognitive barriers for visitors engaging with architectural heritage.
