Motivational factors of volunteer activity in modern crisis periods (a case of Ukraine)

Introduction. The ongoing war in Ukraine is the greatest challenge of the modern world. Millions of Ukrainians and foreigners voluntarily join in various forms of help both to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), and the victims, wounded, orphans, displaced persons and refugees from the occupied territories. This support is necessary to survive the hardest times. Therefore, in the socio-psychological context it is important to understand the motivation of people to help others in spite of their own safety and well-being. Aim: Based on the analysis of scientific articles, historical and contemporary experience of volunteering in the world and in Ukraine, to outline the concept of volunteering and identify the main motivational factors that encourage people to provide selfless voluntary help in difficult times. Methods: theoretical analysis of scientific and journalistic papers, content analysis, comparative analysis, systemic approach, comparison and analogy. Results. The essence of the concept of volunteering in the process of socio-psychological and historical development was outlined. The main motives and factors of volunteer activity in crisis periods were identified. It was revealed that internal (personal) motivation to help others during crises is a primary-importance volunteering factor. Conclusions. The results obtained provide an understanding of human motivation to help others in crisis periods, which can contribute to the effective selection, involvement, and cooperation with volunteers in military, public, humanitarian, medical, and other organizations during martial law and in the post-war period in Ukraine.
