PECULARITIES OF VISUAL PERCEPTION OF IMAGES OF ANCIENT RUSSIAN TEMPLES' TILES

Background. The relevance of the research relates to the growing interest to ancient Russian art and to the lack of sociological and interdisciplinary research on the relationship between society and the products of tile art, widely represented in the culture of the Middle Ages. The purpose and novelty of the work is to study the features of our contemporaries' perception of photographic images of architectural tiles of ancient Russian temples, which are a striking phenomenon of traditional culture. Materials and methods. The peculiarities of perception by different social groups of the architectural tiles of the Verkhospassky Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin of the 17th century and the Pskov Church Georgiya so Vzvoza of the 15th century, included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are investigated in this work, based on the use of an associative experiment. Results. The semantic core of the most frequently repeated associations for the visual image of Moscow tiles was “flowers”, “ornament” and “pattern”, for Pskov tiles - “animals”, “antiquity” and “myth”. Six most frequent categories of associations were identified and their hierarchy in descending order of ranks was established: concrete, abstract, philosophical-psychological, plot, religious-symbolic and allegorical-metaphorical. Similarity in the sequence of ranks of the association categories was found regardless of the age and gender of the recipients. Women were found to have a greater number of associations in all categories than men; women's associations were more diverse, verbose, figurative, and emotionally colored than men's. Differences in young people (17-30 years old) and older generation (31-67 years old) were manifested in the content and quantity of the associative field. EDN: ETHMJC
