The Etnean walled town of Randazzo in iconographies between the 15th and 19th centuries

From the 15th to the 19th centuries, the town of Randazzo was celebrated by a conspicuous number of pictorial images of its urban context. An admirable painting of the Madonna and Child sitting between Saint Agatha and Saint Lucy by the Antonelliana school, preserved in the Church of San Nicola, shows the Etnean landscape and urban design of the Sicilian town in the background. The buildings appear idealised unlike other views which, until the 19th century, showed the town enclosed by walls in more detail, depicted minutely with the location of gates at the most important town buildings. The investigation, based on a cross-referenced study of bibliographic, iconographic and archival sources and a territorial survey of the remains intends to study the iconographic sources that provide important information on the definition of the walls, of which only a few sections remain.
